The Chronicles of Nani On Video

I am overcoming my inability to type with my ability to talk (and talk and talk and talk) I'll be posting a video every week on my YouTube channel. I'll be posting those videos here too along with an occasional regular blog in the mix. (As long as my hands are up to doing the extra typing.)

You'll be able to watch the videos here, but I encourage you to stop by my channel at YouTube once I'm up and running to follow me and get my numbers started!

Happy Halloween!

Jack-o-lanterns made by the Art Club at
Perrysburg High School last year. COOL display!

I’m looking forward to another night similar to last year; I’ll have a few pairs of socks with my Halloween socks as the outer-most layer, a sweater and me parked in the chair part of my walker by the front door for a couple hours. For the kids it’s going to be COLD! We’re only expecting a high of 45 today and the second hour of trick or treating is after dark. I almost think I should be serving hot chocolate! The nice thing about our location is that we are kiddie corner from the parking areas for 2 churches/parochial schools that I’ve been told by some of the older kids who come to the door holding their treat bag in one hand and a hot-dog in the other that the churches have drinks and hot-dogs on Halloween. I’ve heard parents of the younger kids encouraging the kids “Lets go get a hot-dog for dinner now” after our house too. Of course since I’m tending the treat door at our house, I can’t confirm that, it’s not on either church’s website, but the hot-dogs I see don’t lie!

Since Halloween is on a Wednesday this year it’s also Hodge Podge day! This is HP 100; Joyce is hosting Hodge Podge 100 this week!

Joyce did and scheduled her Hodge Podge posts this week as a preemptive strike against Sandy; she’s in New Jersey! This is the comment she left on her own blog today:
“Joyce October 31, 2012 8:13 AM A quick update...no power here and my 3G very intermittent. We are charging electronics via the car so trying to conserve precious battery power. Minor damage to the exterior of the house but nothing thru the roof or windows, dry basement, and we are safe. As a bonus my new landscaping survived the terrifying winds, protected by the big rock. As were we : ). ”

Please keep Joyce and all the residents of New Jersey, New York and all of the areas ravaged by the superstorm in your thoughts and prayers. Recovery will take a while. This is the “It Could Happen Tomorrow” episode from the Weather Channel’s series of catastrophic possibilities. They predicted Katrina too. Maybe TWC needs to stop doing those programs for hurricanes, huh?

1. What creeps you out?

That anyone could consciously hurt an animal. One of the things that animal folks warn and worry about on Halloween is the abuse of cats, especially black cats. I’ve mentioned before that we adopted Carla in October, but she couldn’t come home with us until November. Paws and Whiskers rule was that black cats could not leave the shelter in October because there are people who will adopt a cat to use it as “Halloween decoration” and return it or throw it out of the house after Halloween. Worse that there are people who adopt black cats and do horrendous abusive and deadly things to them as part of their “celebration.” The entire idea that anyone could ever intentionally harm an innocent, trusting and loving animal disgusts me. Those are people that deserve like and kind treatment; they are useless as human beings and we’d all be better off without them stealing oxygen from us all.

Intentional harm to kids or animals brings out the violent vengeance streak in me. I’m okay with that.

2. What's your least favorite candy?

Marshmallows; I would choke down black licorice if I had to eat either that or a marshmallow.

3. Are you a fan of scary movies? What's the scariest movie you've ever seen?

My friend Tom and I used to go to the midnight movies when we were in high school almost every Saturday to see horror flicks. I think the scariest one from that time was “Last House On The Left” because it was the most violent film I'd seen at thge time and the violence was committed on 17-year old girls; I was 17 when I saw it.

As far as recent movies, I’ve heard “red State” is pretty scary in an “It could happen tomorrow” kind of way. Honestly, 1984 was scary in the same way, but the book is more terrifying in that way too. I think the scary movies that could or did actually happen are scarier than the Freddie Kruger or Jason Voorhees types. Those are just scary in the moment but fun overall.

4. What part of life confuses you the most?

I’m really trying not to be political today…

5. Pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, poppy...what's your favorite seed?

I love pumpkin seeds fresh from the oven…YUM!

6. Imagine your life ten years from today...what's changed?

This is a job interview question! I’ve been trying to coach my niece about job interviews and college and the importance of the “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” question and your answer to it. It makes a big difference in choosing a college, a major or staying in school at all. If you don’t stay in school, the answer is pretty depressing if you’re honest with yourself.

Okay, but Nani in the year 2022. We’re 2 years past 2020 and if I didn’t have the big 2020 glasses on New Year’s Eve for that year, things are probably not as good as they would be if I did. So, I’ll assume that I greeted the year 2020 with 2020 vision and I am happy. I hope that in ten years we’re in a different house that’s more handicap-friendly so I curse at fewer things. :)

7. What do you a) love the most and b) like the least about the Hodgepodge?

I like the sense of community, reading how different or similar others’ answers are to mine, reading the comments and seeing which of my answers prompted comments.

What I like least is the occasional question that requires a lot more pop-culture knowledge than I possess!

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I am so done with the zombies. I have used the occasional “zombie apocalypse” joke, but there have been so many adults with garish skin falling off makeup and tutorials so you too can be a zombie like everyone else on the internet… I truly hope after this Halloween the fad dies out. Thanks to Facebook I’m in communication with too many people my age that I knew when they were teenagers and helpless slaves to fads; too many of them haven’t grown up. This is the world we live in. It’s depressing.

Hi! This is the first time I've visited your site and I've hopped over from Joyce's hodgepodge today. I just wanted to say that I think your answers are great - and I'm intrigued to know what pumpkin seeds are like straight out of the oven. I'm English and we don't really "do" pumpkins, well not until recently anyway, and I'd not thought of the seeds being food. Hmmmm.... might try them one day :)

You don't me to get started on what I think we should do to people who hurt animals and kids. They don't deserve to share the air we breathe. They are scum and should be shot on the spot. No jury trial, no consideration, just shot. That's all I'll say.

Happy Halloween!!!
Hugs, Edna and Pogo B.

I did not think about it but that is a total job interview question. Where do you see yourself in...

Nice call on that one.

pop culture...ya, that does take a lot from our brain cells, and I have fewer and fewer as the days go along. Boy, I tellya, I think I'd like to go around your neighborhood on Halloween and 'stock up' on hot dogs.

Sounds pretty chilly for those trick or treaters. I noticed a lot of people do not like black licoric so there is more for me! I'm not a zombie kind of person at all. I do okay with the Twilight movies but I don't do vampires either. Have a nice weekend.
